Are sheet masks overhyped and a waste of money? Here are the facts about them!
I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of the 7 or 10 Step Korean skincare routine where even the most famous K-pop celebrities are doing for their skin. One important step is to put on a sheet mask before applying more products like serums or moisturisers. BUT, does sheet mask really make that big of a difference? We’re here to break it down for you.
If you don’t know what a sheet mask is, (are you living under a rock or something?) It's a cloth-like sheet soaked in creamy essence that you put on your face for 15 - 20 mins. Usually, they contain a higher percentage of active ingredients compared to regular serums.
What ALL sheet masks have in common is that they deliver instant fix to your skin, whether is to relieve dryness or soothe redness.
Popular active ingredients used to target specific skin concerns:
- Centella Asiatica (Cica) for calming skin inflammations or redness
- Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) for skin brightening and mild exfoliation
- Snail Mucin for repairing the skin barrier
So, the MILLION-DOLLAR question - are they necessary in a skincare routine? The answer is complicated because there are several factors that play into it!
It Depends On Your Skin Type
First of all, it depends on your skin type. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, using sheet masks everyday (or at least 3 times a week) can benefit your skin immensely! Using sheet masks consistently can improve your skin moisture barrier and return your skin to its original state.
*favful note: You can use sheet masks everyday as long as they don’t contain any AHAs like Glycolic Acid!
Where You Live May Play A Role
In a humid country like Malaysia, putting on sheet masks everyday may not be needed with high amounts of water vapor already exists in the air which is good for keeping the skin soft and hydrated. BUT if it gets TOO humid, it can leave our complexion looking shiny and sweaty, could result in acne breakouts.
So, we actually recommend using a wash-off face mask for the guys and gals who have oily/combination skin. Wash-off face masks that contain ingredients like salicylic acid, clay etc will be great for purifying all of the gunk and dirt that is causing clogged pores!
Now that we have clarified things, here are some product recommendations of both wash-off masks and sheet masks that we highly recommend!
