Is 10% Niacinamide really too much for the skin?? Truth reveals...
The high & mighty skincare ingredient that everyone LOVES and afraid of at the same time, Niacinamide. People love it for its multi benefits skincare properties like reducing skin oiliness, diminishing acne, reducing transepidermal water loss, etc.
“However, some think that 10% Niacinamide is too much for the skin and ends up irritating or purging the skin. IS THIS TRUE?”
Skin purging only happens with ingredients like Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, etc, that increase the rate of skin cell turnover. BUT, Niacinamide does not have that effect as it is not an exfoliant! So, Niacinamide is not purging the skin. How about skin irritations, maybe that’s the issue? The answer is Yes and No. The Science:
We found a research study by the American College Of Toxicology with patch tests results where people were asked to use a moisturizer containing 0%, 2%, 10% and 20% Niacinamide for 3 weeks. The results showed that even the highest percentage of Niacinamide (20%), did not show any significant skin irritation! I don’t know about you, but my mind is BLOWN.

Here’s what we can tell you. Niacinamide is one of the MOST stable and versatile ingredients for skincare. You can layer it with other active ingredients because Niacinamide actually helps the skin to tolerate other active ingredients as it is anti-inflammatory. Niacinamide itself is NOT irritating to the skin.
Then, what’s the TEA? Why is Niacinamide causing skin irritations? It can be due to allergies which is very unlikely. So, we can assume that the formulation of 10% Niacinamide products is what causes skin irritations. As you know, there are different types of Niacinamide serums out there with different formulated ingredients. So, the same product that works for me might not work for you because no skin types are the same.
Here are some 10% Niacinamide products that we recommend for certain skin types:
Acne Prone, Oily Skin
Dry, Combo Skin
