"I feel so betrayed by K-Beauty Brands..."
I’m pretty sure that EVERYONE has heard of the infamous Centella Green Level SPF (scented/unscented) from Purito. If you haven’t, here’s a small breakdown on what happened and why it emotionally wrecked everyone.
The whole fiasco began when INCIDecoder, an ingredient database founded by a cosmetic chemist, shared lab results that showed Centella Green Level to be SPF 19 when it was labeled as SPF 50+ which obviously caused an uproar within the skincare community. Later on, multiple Korean skincare brands pulled their SPF products off from the market that had the same manufacturer as Purito’s.
HOWEVER, this SPF scandal is actually a common thing in the past, even before this scandal.
According to the Consumer Reports study, 36 out of 53 sunscreens tested were less protective than what the packaging stated which includes major cosmetic brands like La Roche-Posay and Neutrogena too! I KNOW, SHOCKING.
But still, we need to acknowledge the multiple different variabilities that may result in different SPF ratings when it comes to the formulation. Unfortunately, there will be cases where the companies are straight up lying to our faces. So, this issue is NOT ONLY unique to Korean skincare brands.
Don’t Throw Them Away:
So, what do we do with the SPF you already bought which turns out to have the same problem? DON’T THROW EM’ OUT! They might not have the highest SPF, but they are still usable for running quick errands or applied as a light moisturizer, as some of them do work really well as a face primer before foundation.
There’s a reason why we are being told to reapply our sunscreen, because the UV filters of the sunscreen will wear off eventually. So, it’s best to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours to keep your skin protected at all times.
Sunscreen should not be the only thing you reach for. Wearing sun protective clothing is actually one of the best ways to protect yourself from the sun too!
A simple and affordable item that can shield you from the sun, AN UMBRELLA. People tend to forget how important and useful an umbrella is because they don’t feel like holding one wherever they go.
