No filter? No problem! Everything you need to know to get that Instagram-ready skin

Published 2 years ago

Whether you're a high school student dealing with little, white bumps on your face or a millennial who looks older than your age, we all need to take care of the biggest organ we have––and clearly, that's not your heart. (Wink-wink, if you know what we mean.)

While it's normal for our skin to lose its elasticity, moisture, and radiance as we get older, factors like sun overexposure, severe weather conditions, and negative lifestyle choices also contribute to the decreased production of collagen in the body.

And if you're slowly experiencing these natural changes, there are ways that you can do to maintain or restore that healthy, younger-looking skin. Dermatologists suggest that your most desired clear skin can only be achieved if you start adopting a healthier lifestyle and building the right skin care routine. For a lot of people, starting a skincare regimen can be an overwhelming experience. With a plethora of skincare essentials available today, (not to mention your friend's recommendations and Kpop idol's holy grail) choosing the products for your routine feels more like a complicated process.

So, before giving up on your journey to clear skin, you should understand first why skincare is essential.

The skin protects us from many external factors such as germs, toxic substances, and most of all, cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) rays. Since it serves as our major defense against the environment, building a daily skin-care routine at home can keep it healthy, moist, and strong.

A skin-care regimen usually consists of three steps: cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. From there, you'll have to identify what are the essential skincare products for cleaning, balancing, hydrating, and softening your skin. We know that there's a bunch of types out there, that's why  we at Favful want to help you create a simple skin-care routine so the next time you hit the mall, you'll know what to get first.

1. Understand which skincare product is good for your skin

With a lot of products in the skincare aisle, how do I choose a skincare product? Before purchasing a product, it's important that you know what your skin type is––and there are actually two ways to find out.

First is the Bare Face Method that involves washing your face with a mild cleanser, leaving it bare for an hour then observing whether your face appears greasy or dry. Another way is pressing a blotting sheet (also known as the Blotting Sheet Method ) on different areas of your face to see how much oil is visible.

One done, you'll now have to check the labels for ingredients that can trigger skin allergies such as parabens, imidazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, phenoxyethanol, methylchloroisothiazolinone, and formaldehyde. Although some of them have exfoliating properties, it's recommended to apply only a small amount to your face, especially if you have sensitive skin.

2. Outline your daily skin care essentials

If you're a beginner, the first question here is whether a face wash is necessary. Washing your face is obviously one of the essential steps in your skin-care regimen. Before applying anything to your face––moisturizer, serums, and whatnots––you need to make sure that you have removed all traces of dirt, sebum, makeup, and pollutants.

When it comes to necessary skin care products, Favful offers a variety of cleansers suitable for your skin type and concerns. You may check out:

After cleansing, you can now move on to the next step: apply a facial toner.

But are toners really necessary in your skincare regimen? Aside from removing all the stubborn dirt missed during cleansing, a toner corrects and restores your skin's pH balance while it prepares for the following products. Most toners are alcohol-free, water-based products with antioxidants and cell-repairing ingredients. There are a lot of organic and natural facial toners that have been popping up everywhere––one of which is the rose water toner.

When talking about this product, everyone usually asks the same question: Is rose water a toner? Of course, it is! As a matter of fact, it's a natural toner (superior to witch hazel) that can do wonders to your skin.

The third most important thing in your skincare routine is of course using a hydrating, water-based moisturizer to ensure your skin stays soft or (at least) doesn’t wrinkle up like a passion fruit that has been on a shelf slightly too long.  Kidding aside, for this essential part of your routine, we recommend:

Tip: You can also include adding serum, eye cream, and spot treatment between cleansing and moisturizing. You may try Good Molecules Pure Cold-pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil.

Last but not least, sunscreen. Just like any facial cleansers and toners, we also need a proper sunscreen to protect ourselves from the rather dangerous UV radiation. For this, we recommend Elta MD UV Daily Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40, which hydrates and protects your skin without being sticky or leaving smudges on your face.

3. Know the skincare essentials for your skin type and age

However, what works for normal or combination skin, may not always work for dry and oily skin. Since using a moisturizer is a must for everyone, those who are building a skincare routine for oily and dry skin should opt for a lightweight water-based moisturizers (which are formulated with hyaluronic acid and aloe vera water) that can provide your skin a much-needed moisture.

Meanwhile, for women in their 30s, they need to do a little adjustments to the usual skincare routine. Usually, the best skincare routine for 30s involves adding a lightweight SPF under a primer and makeup to lock in moisture throughout the day. Apart from that, an eye cream is also needed to keep the sensitive skin around our eyes hydrated.

Whether it's brushing your teeth or trimming your hair, our skincare plays an important role when it comes to properly taking care of our body. From a rapidly aging to healthy-looking skin, a small investment can make the difference!
